OGANDE SCHOOL FOR THE MENTALLY CHALLENGED, SHALLOW WELL WATER PROJECT 2019

OGANDE SCHOOL FOR THE MENTALLY CHALLENGED— KANYADA HOMA BAY SUB-COUNTY

0.01: Background

The Matata Nursing Hospital started its operations in 1992 as a small Community Health Outreach Program.  It is located in Oyugis Town Rachuonyo South District, Homa-Bay County-Kenya; which has approximate population of 260,000 (2009, Government of Kenya census). The hospital employs 140 people composed of medical doctors, nurses, clinicians, technicians, clerks, casuals and the management. It was registered as a hospital by the Ministry of Health in 1992.

The hospital has 150 bed capacity providing comprehensive health services to the communities from Homa Bay and neighboring counties.

0.02: PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Ogande School for the mentally challenged is a co-education facility for the primary education program. It is located within Ogande Community, Kanyada-Homa Bay sub-County; Homa Bay County.

The school has 156 children; girls are 89 and boys 67; 13 teachers, has classes 1 to 8. According to statistical back ground of these children, some of the causes of mental challenges are either:

  • Prolonged mother labor during delivery, or
  • Drug abuse during pregnancy
  • Use of forceps
  • Stress during pregnancy
  • Physical harm from an accident or a fight
  • Aborted abortion
  • Giving birth at old age, or
  •
  •

We expect to dig Shallow water well manually to approximate depth of 100ft for reliable water yield and fit hand pumping system. The well will be reinforced on the walls by concreted rings since the areas has extremely weak soils.

0.03: Ogande area/community.

The area is hilly with some shape terrains and stony. There is no piped water within the area, neither is there reliable river. The school for a long time has been depending on the waters drawn by donkey cart from fairly a distance location. The area is generally highly water deficit. The area equally appears to be very vulnerable to related water bone diseases. This is due to its inability to access clean safe water supply. The Ogande School for the mentally challenged is located in the interior part of the wider Ogande community. The roads are rugged with transportation system a great challenge and the nearest town is Homa Bay which is about 15 kilometers away.

0.04: SPECIFIC ACHIEVABLE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:

(1) To develop a shallow water well with safe clean water for use by the Ogande school for the mentally challenged with pupil population of 156 and teachers 13.

On successful implementation of the shallow water well project, the following outcomes are expected:

  • Reduced water related infections amongst those who would be using water source
  • Increased learning hours( teacher-pupils relations)
  • Improved school academic performance, more so for the mentally challenge pupils.
  • Reduced cost of school management. Water will no longer be purchased through hired donkey cart.
  • General improved school community health, hygiene and wellbeing as they would be using clean safe water from the developed water well.
