0.02: PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Ongalo Nursery School Development

Ongalo Primary School is one of the oldest Primary Schools in the area. It has housed a nursery School. Ongalo Primary School, with the support through the Foundation Matata Children Hospital Kenya, Netherlands has benefitted from total primary school classrooms renovation and safe clean shallow well water supply.

The Ongalo Nursery School is housed in temporary corrugated iron sheet building with extremely dusty floor. The temporary structure does not meet minimum objectives of Pre-school (Nursery) as outlined in the Ministry of Education Pre-school guidelines, and stated as:

To prepare informal education geared towards developing the child’s mental capabilities and physical growth.

To make it possible for the child to enjoy living and learning through play.

To enable the child to build good habits for effective living as an individual and a member of a group.

To develop the child’s imagination, self-reliance and thinking skills.

To enrich the child’s experiences so as to enable him/her to cope better with primary school life.

It is generally understood that much of the first two years of a child’s life is spent in the creation of a child’s first “sense of self”; most children are able to differentiate between themselves and others by their second year. This is a crucial part of the child’s ability to determine how they should function in relation to other people.

SPECIFIC ACHIEVABLE OBJECTIVES/IMPACTS OF ACTIVITIES OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT

Development of a new Nursery School

Increased enrolment from the present number of 20 to 50 on completion of the renovation.

A created rich learning environment able to develop a child’s potentials for future firm learning/education foundation.

Reduced preventable air and water borne diseases infections due to previous poor state of facilities.

A child’s imagination and self-reliance and thinking ability would have been developed when attending pre-school education at Ongalo Nursery school.

Sustainable relationships between Foundation Matata Children Hospital Kenya, Matata Foundation-Kenya, the funding Foundation and the community would be built for livelihood improvement.

Children’s experienced would be enriched to enable him /her better cope with the primary school life.
